The Farm & Our Family History.

The Farm

King Island is located off the north-western tip of Tasmania and just 8 kilometres from the east coast of the island, more than 2,600 acres of lush, green pastures are home to the Raff Family Farm and its herd of over 2,000 Angus cattle.

Because the waters of Bass Strait limit frosts, along with temperatures that rarely exceed 280C and the soil being so productive, King Island is one of the few places where grass grows all year round.

All cattle are designed to eat grass. However, the Angus breed, originating from Scotland where high rainfalls, low temperatures and green grass are a plenty makes for this breed to be best adapted to the uniqueness as to what King Islands grazing farmlands offer.

Along with the pedigree Angus cattle, free-range chooks, a small flock of Texel sheep for fat lamb production and of course our working dog and family pets also share this island idyll with us.
Aside from the farm’s main Family Homestead, there are two other houses on the property that have been recently renovated now providing farm stay accommodation. These houses give visiting guests the opportunity to stay on farm and enjoy the tranquil surrounds of farm life. Personal farm tours are also available.

The Raff family have been in the cattle business since 1965.

Our Family History

In 1965, when just 20 years of age, stud founder David Raff had an unwavering passion for livestock and purchased four Angus Cows that founded the Raff Angus Stud and Family Business. With the support of his wife Jill, he dedicated his life to the Angus breed located within the south-eastern corner of Queensland for five decades. However, in 2015, after year upon year of financially crippling and mentally draining droughts, they made the bold decision to uproot their business, family, livestock, and personal belongings to relocate a couple thousand kilometres south to King Island in pursuit of higher rainfall, improved production security and a better way of life.

Their son Andrew inherited his father’s passion and has also dedicated his life to Angus livestock and seedstock production, and with his wife Anna, a Veterinarian, have continued to grow the family business.

The third generation of Raff’s – Andrew and Anna’s children – Harry, Charlie, Georgina, and Olivia each own livestock and are actively involved in the business.
